Last Workout of the Year

Liz talked me into riding one last time. We all met (Matt, Seth, Liz & I) out at the Wildlife Refuge with our off-road bikes & just road gravel/dirt roads. They were muddy, snow & ice covered, & just plain fun! Did about 10 miles in 45 minutes with it snowing/icing/raining. Good way to end the year.
Bring on 2013!

Rudolph Run 5K

Last race of 2012 was the Rudolph Run 5K on the morning of Christmas Eve in Shelbyville. When I saw this race, I wasn't planning on doing it since it was an hour away. But a few days before the event, a few of my running buddies from the run group were talking about going. Of course, I was easily convinced to go. Four of us carpooled to race that started at 9am. We got there & registered, then it was out the door for a warmup. Nice & easy 1 mile about 20 minutes before the race. I figured with about 300 runners, I could finish in the top 50 so I wanted to start towards the front. The fun went off & the guy beside me took off, well for 2 steps at least. Then he cut in front of me & slowed down. Out came my elbow with a kind bump to his shoulder & around him I went. The race was on. First 50 yards were fast & furious, then a sharp left turn. After that turn, I settled into my pace. I just the faster ones go as I knew half of them would come back to me. And at the 3/4 mile mark I started picking them off one at a time. And not one of them got back around me. The first 1.5 miles were on a paved path, then then the next 0.5 miles went around a subdivision, & the last 1.1 miles were back on the path. 1 by 1, I just kept picking off positions. With about 1/2 mile to go, I assumed I had moved up to about 20th overall. The last 0.1 was an all out sprint & I could hear someone coming up from behind. No way was I letting them pass me at the line! Finish line time was 20:28, good for 20th overall. After finishing, I watching as my other running partners came in. Three of them got PR's with Liz winning her age group! The top 20 males & top 20 females all got trophies & I was 16th male. Trophy in hand was a good way to finiah off the races for 2012. Can't wait for the 2013 racing season to start.

RACEDAY

August 26th, 2012
Raceday started at 3am, while actually I woke up before the alarm went off (as usual). Showered, then ate breakfast with consisted of PB&J & 2 Fit & Active milk chocolate shakes, also had a small cup of coffee. Headed out the door at 3:45am to meet Liz & RaeAnn in the lobby of our hotel (Courtyard by Marriott). Out of the hotel by 4am & to transition by 4:15am, it was about a 3/4 mile wakl. There was already a line to get into transition which didn't open until 4:45am. Line got pretty big but we were one of the 1st 50 inside. Got inside & put IM Perform bottles on bike, aired up tires, & did a quick check to make sure everything looked good. Meet back up with Liz & RaeAnn, then headed down to the swim start, which was about a mile walk. We were at the swim start by 5:10am. Got our race numbers put on our arms & legs, my was done by my friend Cristy Doll. Headed to the end of the start line, which seemed like it was already pretty long. Since this race is a time trial start which we go into the water one at a time, I figured it would take about 15 minutes to start. But someone else in line said it would only take 5-7 minutes, which it did! Now was the waiting game is the start wasn't until 7am. Took a visit to the bathroom a couple of times, once to the port-a-pots, other was to the bushes (by the 2nd time, the line was fairly long). About 6:15am, Cathy & my parents found us line & wished us luck (of course took a few pictures). We had a good view of the start area & got to see the pros start at 6:50am.
When the gun went off at 7am, it sure didn't take long to get to the water. 2.4 miles of swimming in the Ohio river was up first. The 1st 1/2 mile of the swim is on the inside of an island & my plan was to stay towards the outside of the island to avoid the crowds. This worked great! After passing the end of the island, we continue in the same direction, just more towards the center of the river. This is when it got weird. Every 10-15 strokes, I look up to make sure I'm headed in the right direction. Once when I did this, it looked like someone was walking. How could they be walking in the river? Put my head down & continued. Next time I looked up, I saw it again. OK, maybe it was a lifeguard on a paddle board. Next time, it was a lady walking. WTH! Now I'm thinking it is a low spot & I want nothing to do with it. All I could think was I didn't want to step on something that would have cut my hands or feet. So I head left to get more to the middle & more into the crowd. Later I learned that it was a sandbar that everyone was walking on. Checked my watch & I was right on pace. Next was the turn buoy which was extremely crowded. Turned & headed downstream. I could see the 2 bridges that we pass under & the 3rd bridge, which if you get to you have gone too far. About 1/2 back I checked by watch again & was still right on pace. Got out of the water & checked my watch, 1:16:57. Was hoping for a 1:15:00 but I was still very happy with that.
Next was transition which is a good 1/4 mile walk/jog. Got to see my family along the way, always good. Grabbed my transition bag & headed to the changing tent, put on my socks, bike shoes, helmet, & sunglasses. Got my bike & headed out for 112 miles. T1 was 5:53.
Started drinking my IM Perform right away. The plan was to drink alot & stay calm for the 1st 60+ miles. The 1st 10 miles are pancake flat, just settle in cruise. Pasted the aid station & grabbed another Perform. Next up was a nice little climb, stayed in the seat & spin. I was trying to keep a cadence (RPM) of 90-100. Made a right turn to start a 4.5 mile out & back section. It has a nice long downhill with the same distance back uphill. On the downhill, I hit a max speed of 43.5 mph. Headed up hill where the gream ripper was waited & then the devil. Those fans made it fun! Got to the end of the out part & passed another aid station. This time & everytime after, I grabbed 2 Performs & a water. The water was to wash down my salt tablets that I took every 16 miles & to spray over my head if I felt hot. Headed back downhill & then up again. This uphill had a guy dressed as Superman & he had a megaphone screaming at us! Now on to the 2 loops section which 1st takes us to Buckner & is the section that I think is hardest part of the bike course. Another aid station & right after that is where my family is stationed. I rented a GPS unit that they could track me & know when I was getting close to them. I saw them before they saw me, so I started waving at them. They jumped up & started cheering, another needed boost on a very long day! Left turn & headed towards LaGrange & there is where I saw RaeAnn's cheer block (Team Survival). This section is probably the fastest part of the bike course. Then a left off the highway & into the country. More hills, but isn't it all. Aid station & more Perform. Left again once you get to Sligo, another aid station, then left to start the 2nd loop. This time when I got to Buckner, my family was standing & ready for me. I stopped long enough to put my foot down so they could take a picture, then off again. That was the only time I stopped during the bike. After Sligo at the next aid station, I noticed about 20 bikers had stopped & it looked like they were in line for the port-a-pot. I was thinking if I had to go that bad, I would have found a tree or something. I learned later that some idiot had thrown tacks on the road & about 50 bikes got flat tires! I was lucky enough to not get a flat. The last 30 miles is mostly downhill to flat & my plan was to pick up the pace during this section. But when I made that last left turned, I turned into a headwind! Oh well, everyone has the same conditions. Last couple of aid stations I took a few extra salt tablets, didn't want to cramp, & it worked. Coming back into transtions, I saw my family again. Finished the bike in 5:47:10, 19.5 mph average. Was hoping for 5:45:00, but was still very happy. Felt like I could have went harder but wanted to same something for the run.
Transition 2 was next, off the bike & handed it to a volunteer, grabbed my bag again & headed into the changing tent. They have volunteers in the tent helping with anything you need help with. My volunteer was another friend, Nathan Otte! Changed socks & shoes, put on a hat, grabbed more salt tablets & off I went. T2 was 5:53. Funny that both my transtions were the exact same time! Now just a marathon left.
Out of the gate on the run & 1/4 mile into it I get to see & high five my family. Feeling great to start out. Next up is the 2nd Street bridge. It has the only elavation on the run course to speak of. Hit the first aid station then get almost to Indiana & they make you turn around. On the bridge, I see my neighbor Kendra. She has signs & is cheering me on. I can't say enough how important this is to all competitors. Later I learn that she meant the winner, Patrick Evoe. She saw him walking down the sidewalk & had a finisher's medal on, If you know Kendra, of course she struck up a conversation. Back to the run... Off the bridge & get to see my family & a lot of friends again. Then it is on to the out & back section of the course, 6 miles out & 6 miles back. Things seem to be going good, hitting every aid station, walking thru to make sure I get everything I need including ICE since it is over 90. I heard that the high for the day was between 92-94. I stuff ice in my hat, in my shirt, & in my shorts. This really seemed to help a lot. About mile 4 it really starting getting tough. Needed to walk a little more. I was hoping to run in between very aid station (which were a mile apart), then walk every aid station. But starting at mile 4, I was getting half way then walking another minute. Also started taking a GU gel every 3 or 4 miles. Made it to the turn around & headed back towards downtown. Got passed by the top 3 women (if not more). Also saw the top men as they were headed to the finish as I was headed out on my 1st loop. Got to see RaeAnn then Liz as they were headed out when I was headed back. When you get back to downtown, you get within 3 blocks of the finish, then you have to take a right turn to head out on the 2nd loop. 1st loop on the run was just like the 1st loop on the bike, pretty spread out & not a lot of runners. But when I started that 2nd loop, there was a lot of runners starting there 1st loop. This was a good thing, catching & passing people is always good (but was also getting passed too). One last time to see my family & friends as I started the 2nd loop. It was tough & I think I actually walked from 1 aid station to the next a couple of times. Lots of ice, sometimes I would take a cup of just ice & eat it. I could feel my goal of breaking 12 hours slipping away, but I knew it would be close. With just about 3 miles to go, I saw RaeAnn again but I don't remember see Liz again. Probably did but at that point I was so focused on the finish. After the last aid station with just over 1 mile to go, I decided to try & run to the finish line. As I got closer & the crowds got bigger & louder, that make it easier to do. I could now see the finish line, I knew I had did it (again)! I crossed the finish line with a run time of 5:08:44 for a average of 11:47. I was shooting for 4:30:00 but it sure was hot.
My official finish time was 12:24:37 for 523rd place out of 3014 starters & 92nd place out of 464 men in the age group 40-44. Thats top 20%, I'll take that. I know it was hot, but I really didn't think the heat affected me as it did most.

May 13th

Went down to Louisville & met up with a group of others doing the Ironman also & rode part of the bike course. I just glad that I don't live down there, traffic was horrible compared to what I'm use to around here.

Week 15 totals - swim (1:15:10, 3100 yds), bike (5:22:05, 96.55 miles), run (4:13:13, 26.93 miles), strength (1:07:58) for a total of 11:58:26.

May 6th

I know, I know, I am way behind posting my data so I am catching up now. I have been keeping my logs just fine, just not posting to my blog page.

Did the Seymour Mini Marathon on May 5th. Warm & muggy morning, still thought I could do a 1:45:00 or so which would have been a PR. Instead, I did 1:42:16 for a 7 minute PR! 17th overall! Pretty stoked about that too.

Also went over a 1000 miles on the bike.

Week 14 totals - swim (2:04:55, 6600 yds), bike (4:18:47, 73.83 miles), run (3:23:10, 24.28 miles), strength (58:38) for a total of 10:45:30.

April 30th

Raceday bike setup.

Back at it this week. Not too bad, had 6 run workouts, also 50 mile bike / 5 mile run brick on Sunday. The brick workout really felt good with a very good pace on the run.

Weekly training totals - swim (3:02:48, 8200 yds), bike (6:20:05, 113.70 miles), run (4:55:16, 33.83 miles) for a total of 14:18:09.

Next week, I am doing the Seymour Mini Marathon (13.1 mile run) on Saturday & hopefully the B2 bike Time Trial (12.2 miles) on Sunday. The bike distance doesn't look like much but it is an all-out effort. Hoping to PR both!

April 22nd

I'm a little behind post data, so I'll post 2 weeks worth this time.

April 15th

What was suppose to be a big week turned into more of a recovery week. Wind & cool temps postponed my bike rides during the week. The long bike on Saturday turned into a dash for cover when the lightning stated. And I cancelled Wednesday night swim because the pool heater was not turned on. Just too early in the season to risk getting sick. Oh well, training moves on.

Weekly totals - swim (2:06:15, 5900 yds), bike (2:22:36, 41.9 miles), run (4:39:06, 31.39 miles), & strength (2:12:28) for a total of 11:20:25.

Training totals thru 11 weeks - swim (28:08:19, 70,900 yds), bike (41:50:24, 718.46 miles), run (38:47:58, 243.49 miles), strength (14:56:34), & spin bike (16:56:04) for a total of 140:39:19.

Week 12 brings 3 time trials, 1 swim, 1 bike, & 1 run. Should be fun to see how fast I can go!! Oh & I have baseball Tuesday thru Friday nights also.

April 8th

Happy Easter! Got alot of work in this week. 11 total workouts & 3 baseball games including a double header on Saturday. Don't like those DH cause they take up valuable training time. After the DH, another Ironman asked if I was now headed out for a long bike ride. I asked if a 2 hr ride was long & he said yes after a DHer!

Got most of my hrs in this week which was tough since the pool was closed Friday for Good Friday & today was Easter with dinner at mom's at 1pm. I was able to get a 10 mile run in after church & before that big meal.

Weekly totals - swim (2:06:03, 6200 yds), bike (8:28:17, 145.66 miles), run (4:11:41, 29.41 miles), strength (1:09:12), & spin bike (0) for a total of 15:55:13.

Training totals - swim (26:02:04, 65,00 yds), bike (39:27:48, 676.56 miles), run (34:08:52, 212.1 miles), strength (12:44:06), & spin bike (16:56:04) for a total of 129:18:54. That puts the weekly average to 12:55:53. Not too shabby.

This coming week brings 23 hrs & more baseball. First century (100 miles) bike ride is scheduled for Saturday. And will do my longest run of the year on Sunday too.

April 1st

This was a recovery week, no April's fool either. I took advantage of it but also got all my work it. The Blue Streak is FAST! No other way to put it. Big week coming next plus high school baseball season starts for me.  19 hrs training & 4 baseball games, who needs a real job with all this.

Weekly totals - strength (0), swim (2:58:48, 7250 yds), bike (5:59:03, 109.96 miles), spin bike (0), & run (2:35:03, 15.09 miles) for a total of 11:32:54.

Looks like I still need to improve on my strength workouts (get to the gym) but its hard to go to gym with all this nice weather. And the weather is the reason there is no spin bike, hope to keep it that way.

Training totals - strength (11:34:54), swim (23:56:01, 58,800 yds), bike (30:59:31, 530.9 miles), spin bike (16:56:04), & run (29:57:11, 182.69 miles) for a total of 113:23:41. That puts the weekly average of 12:35:41.

Also weight is down to 154, 38 total lost!

March 11

Business is about to pick up. With DST kicking in, I now have that 'extra' hour each evening. That translate in to more bike time for sure.

Week 6 totals - swim (3:21:53, 8200yds), bike (1:53:00, 29.2 miles), spin bike (1:10:00), run (4:21:50, 26.26 miles), & strength (2:03:55) for a total of 12:50:36.

Next week is scheduled to be a 17 hr week.

March 4th

Biggest volume week of the year so far, 14 hrs & 45 minutes. Coach wanted more & I delivered! Now that basketball season is over for me, it is much easier to get in the hours. Nicer weather helps also. Was able to get out on the bike twice this week & now the weather is calling for up to 2" snow by morning. But I shouldn't complain, southern Indiana was hit Friday with severe storms & tornados. At least 13 people died & 3 or 4 small towns were wiped out. Henryville school was totally destroyed. Keeping all those affected in our thoughts & prayers. We are having a 5K run next Sunday & all the money is going to them to help out.

Week 5 totals - strength (2:11:25), swim (2:59:37, 7200 yds), bike (3:20:24, 55.5 miles), spin bike (2:40:00), & run (3:33:35, 21.47 miles) for a total of 14:45:00.

Training totals - strength (7:19:53), swim (13:39:21, 33,450 yds), bike (6:23:35, 105.65 miles), spin bike (15:25:45), run (14:55:54, 89.05 miles) for a total of 57:44:28).

Weekly average hours is now at 11:32:54. Not too bad for just being the 1st week of March.

Next week is a recovery week of 13 hrs.

Feb 26th

Missed last weeks update so I will do 2 this week.

Week 3 totals - strength (2:10:22), swimming (2:08:34, 5000 yds), biking (0), spin bike (4:20:00), & running (3:01:37, 15.85 miles) for a total of 11:41:03.
Training totals - strength (3:32:02), swimming (7:38:45, 19,050 yds), biking (1:26:55, 24.24 miles), spin bike (10:48:45), & running (7:28:27, 44.39 miles) for a total of  30:54:54.

Thats an average of over 10 hrs per week for the 1st 3 weeks.  Looked at my log for the 2008 Ironman & I was averaging only 4.5 hrs over the 1st 3 weeks.

Now on to this past week. Actually took Tuesday off, problem was I did a basketball game at Milan, IN which took almost 6 hrs of my day.

Week 4 totals - strength (1:36:28), swimming (3:01:00, 7200 yds), biking (1:36:16, 25.91 miles), spin bike (1:57:00), & running (3:53:53, 23.19 miles) for a total of 12:04:37.
Training totals - strength (5:08:28), swimming (10:39:45, 26,250 yds), biking (3:03:11, 50.15 miles, spin bike (12:45:45), & running (11:22:18, 67.58 miles) for a total of 42:59:27.

Getting close to 11 hrs/week average but not there yet. More to come this coming week, no basketball so we will see what I can do. It is boys basketball sectional week, so I will be going to a few games, just not working them (less time consuming plus it is here in Seymour.)

Feb 13th

Another week in the books, I think one of my training partners said 28 weeks to go. Did a 10K race on Saturday which I didn't push the pace to the Max & still ended up with a PR (51:30, 8:17 pace). And it was cold, 15° with a wind chill of 0°! Finished 17th out of 43 runners. My swim seems to be coming along very well, feel pretty good in the water. Actually had a couple of high schoolers look at my workout sheet & couldn't believe how much I was doing.

Week 2 totals - Strength (56:39), swim (2:52:59, 7500yds), bike (0), spin bike (3:28:46), & run (2:12:24, 14.71 miles) for a total of 9:30:48.
Training totals - Strength (1:21:41), swim (5:30:11, 14,050), bike (1:26:55, 24.24 miles), spin bike (6:28:45), & run (4:26:50, 28.54 miles) for a total of 19:14:22.

Basketball season is winding down, few more weeks to go. Did the biggest game of my career this past week, two 4A schools, thought I did pretty good.

Now time to step up the hours, hope to get close to 15 hrs this week.

Super Bowl Sunday! Indy has done a great job as host city. We went up there last Sunday & it was pretty awesome. Being in Colts country, go Giants!

Now back to training. This was the 1st week of real training. Got in 3 swim sessions, 3 bike sessions, & 3 run sessions. All 3 runs were outside, which I was glad because I hate running on the treadmill. Also got outside for a nice 25 mile bike ride Thursday, absolutely beautiful for a February day. Also got in 1 strength training session.

Week 1 totals - Strength (25:02), swim (2:37:13, 6550 yds), bike (1:26:55, 24.24 miles), spin bike (3:00:00), run (2:14:28, 13.83 miles) for a total of 9:43:38.

Looking forward to what the next weeks training brings to me.

Also of note, I am down to 159 lbs which I have not seen that number since high school days. Bad side is that none of my clothes fit me, had to take my ref pants in to have them altered. Guess that is a good problem to have. Better to take them in rather than let them out!

Jan 25th

First time back in the pool, tonight. Felt good being in the water. I did not swim in school so this triathlon thing has got me hooked on swimming, absolutely love it! Next week I plan on getting to the pool 2-3 times a week.

Accomplished a big goal this week also, finally got under 160lbs! Just a little bit more to go.

Final thing tonight, I got my website update with last years race results. Check it at
www.gregreasoner.com/triathlon.html

Feel free to leave a comment. Plus that way I know someone is reading this.

Had a great week of workouts & lbs are still going down! Saw a friend at the gym yesterday that I hadn't seen in awhile & they didn't recognize me. That was pretty awesome.
Still doing a lot of basketball games, 8 games coming this weekend! I love doing basketball, wish it was year around.
Have a great weekend everyone.
